Sustainable and climate-conscious action is in the DNA of the CHIRON Group and is of crucial importance beyond maintaining our economic performance. We take our responsibility seriously and make the best possible contribution to the success of this major, globally significant transformation.
For our customers we develop solutions that simultaneously conserve resources and increase productivity. With the »Sustainability@CHIRON Group« program, we have laid the foundation for making sustainability a strategic factor in our business model, for us and our customers.
We have set ourselves an ambitious target: climate-neutral production in Scope 1 and 2 worldwide by the end of 2025. To achieve this, we are relying on a combination of different measures: We are reducing our energy consumption, expanding the generation of our own electricity, switching to green electricity and offsetting unavoidable emissions in the short term. These steps are aimed at achieving a balanced emissions balance in Scope 1 and 2 across the entire production network.
Around half of our total global energy requirements are attributable to the consumption of electrical energy. We are therefore placing a particular focus on switching to green electricity and expanding our own electricity generation through photovoltaic systems.
We participate in the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) and have officially committed to meeting the targets for reducing emissions and having our progress independently verified. In May 2024, our emission reduction measures and targets were approved and confirmed by the SBTi.
The wording of the official confirmation from the SBTi reads:
»CHIRON Group SE commits to reduce absolute GHG emissions according to Scope 1 and 2 by 50% by 2028, starting from the base year 2018. CHIRON Group SE also commits to reduce absolute GHG emissions according to Scope 3 by 25% within the same timeframe.«
With this commitment, together with many other companies worldwide, we are making our contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Since 2021, we have voluntarily provided information about our activities in all relevant areas in our annual sustainability reports, which are prepared in accordance with the GRI standards. We provide data on past successes, focus on future key topics and show that economic performance and sustainability go hand in hand in the long term.
The motto of the current report is »We are one«. The focus topics in the 2023 report are our approved emission reduction measures and targets in accordance with SBTi as well as the diverse activities of our international CHIRON Group sites.
Our commitment to sustainability also extends to our customers: The machining centers of the CHIRON Group and the manufacturing processes they enable are designed for efficiency. Their ecological footprint is impressive in terms of energy requirements as well as the use of resources such as production time, space requirements, investment, and personnel. A prime example: the Micro5 for high-precision machining of delicate parts in the smallest of spaces, with up to 50 times lower energy consumption compared to conventional systems.
Achieving greater sustainability is easier when working together. That is why we are involved in various initiatives and partnerships, and why we cultivate an exchange of interests in associations and cross-industry company networks. Here and there, we drive the issue forward and help shape the socio-political, economic and ecological framework. As a partner in the VDMA Blue Competence initiative, we have also committed ourselves to adhering to the twelve sustainability guidelines of mechanical and plant engineering. These are based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative.
